Kowloon Walled City always had its own unique political position: an autonomous system during British colonization as well as Chinese governance. After the rising of the communist government of Mao, Walled City had become a shelter for many Chinese immigrants. Because of the fast increase of population, Walled City had grown vertically within a short period of time. Slowly and gradually, the distinctive system on top of the exaggerated information from the media, Kowloon Walled City had become a constructed concept, filled with the images of terrifying crimes and hygienic condition. It’s a utopia for some, but a dystopia for the rest. The Walled City was taken down in 1993 by Hong Kong Government.

Artist Ting-Ting CHENG based in Chungking Mansion for a month for the project. The building is the home for people from more than 120 countries, mostly from Middle East, South and Southeast Asia and Africa.

By connecting the disappeared Kowloon Walled City and the modern time Chungking Mansion, the project intends to compare the immigration situation of Hong Kong past and present by exploring the traces of colonization. Through the reflection of history, the video is designed to emphasize the constructed fear created based on class and race in our society. In the video, the artist applied large amount of footages from mass media, including TV series, movies, comic and documentary. With the attempt to find Wong Long, a political figure from Kowloon Walled City in the past, Cheng created a story oscillating between fictions and reality, in order to discuss the current definition of nation, borders, immigrants and identity of Hong Kong in the post-colonial time, meanwhile, opening up conversation about the possibility of utopia and dystopia.
