"In Search of Coastline" Art Parade Education Project 2018-19

STORIES OF THE COASTLINE OF KOWLOON
PENINSULA

Designated for national salt production, Kowloon Bay became an economic hub since as early as the Song dynasty. The salt fields spread across the present-day Kwun Tong, Kowloon City, and Yau Tsim Mong District. Villages thrived in the area. With the hilly landscape along the coast in Eastern Kowloon, hard rock mines were built in the Qing dynasty to meet construction needs.
In the Deed of Lease of Kowloon (1860), the area (later ceded to Britain) was described as uncultivable barren hills. It was said that the peninsular had become a resort for outlaws, and so the British control would allow “the protection of the good population, and the expulsion or punishment of the bad, as well as for bringing the whole locality into order…”
After Kowloon Peninsula was ceded, the British Government set out to create land by coastal reclamation. Military concern and geographical limitations of the hills also saw the gradual shift of the business centre from Kowloon City to Yau Ma Tei, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Mong Kok. After a century of urban development, the coastline looks nothing like before.
TSIM SHA TSUI
With the opening of the Kowloon Wharf and Holt's Wharf, Tsim Sha Tsui became a hub for logistics and passenger flow in the early 20th century. Tourism continued to prosper in the area, and in 1966, the pier of Kowloon Wharf was rebuilt as the Ocean Terminal, the first shopping mall in Asia.
In 1907, the British Government launched several reclamation projects in the eastern and southern part of Tsim Sha Tsui for the Kowloon-Canton Railway. The construction was completed in 1916 with the terminus situated right next to the Ferry Pier and the Cruise Pier. The railway supported transportation that went all the way to Continental Europe, and it only took 18 days on board from Hong Kong to Berlin.
After WWII, new infrastructures such as the Hung Hom Railway Station and the Cross-Harbour Tunnel were constructed on the newly reclaimed land in East Tsim Sha Tsui. In the 80’s, the glamour of the nightclub industry that flourished in the commercial district symbolised the economy at its peak.
HUNG HOM
Towards the end of the 19th century, the establishment of the Whampoa Dock and the Green Island Cement Factory brought a surge in industrial development along coastal Hung Hom. Facing the demand for factory extension, rocks were extracted from Tai Wan Shan for land reclamation.
TO KWA WAN
Towards the end of the Southern Song dynasty, two young emperors fled south and temporarily took refuge in the area. The words "Sung Wong Toi" (Terrace of the Song kings) were later inscribed on the rock in memory of the history. It has since become a well-known historic relic.
At the MTR To Kwa Wan construction site, where the old airport located, the excavation for the Shatin to Central Link unearthed six wells dating back to the Song dynasty, indicating that Kowloon City was once a populous area.
Hoi Sham Island was an island off the coast of Chi Kiang Street where the Fishtail Rock and the statue of the Dragon Mother were popular sightseeing attractions. Once a popular pastime location amongst local residents, the reclamation projects in the 60’s had the island connected to the peninsula. The island was later developed into Hoi Sham Park, and the statue was relocated to Ha Heung Road.
In early 20th century, the slaughtering house at Hung Hom was relocated to To Kwa Wan. The new cattle depot and slaughtering house brought a vibe to offensive trades such as skin processing, leather manufacturing, and offal removal. The complex was turned into an arts village after the slaughterhouse closed down in 1999.
During WWII, many businessmen took refuge in Hong Kong and set up factories in To Kwa Wan for fabric, wood, firecrackers, and MSG manufacturing, and an industrial area slowly took form. However, the consequent air pollution and industrial waste became an environmental nuisance.
