Event Details
• Historical Background
Built in 1845, the St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery is one of the oldest Catholic cemeteries in Hong Kong, well known among HK people with its famous Chinese couplets at the entrance. The colonial government later picked the opposite spot to build HK's first racecourse in 1848, and there went the name "Happy Valley", in Chinese meaning "A Horseracing Spot". The Hong Kong tram was connected to Happy Valley (Sing Woo Road) in 1904. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Happy Valley Amusement Park (You Yuen) was born, making Happy Valley known as You Yuen. The site was converted in the middle of the 20th century into today's Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital.
